Chapter 18

Richard closed the door to Jack Viker’s room as Kitty flicked on the light. Instantly, the room turned from shades of gray to color. The sunny, yellow walls warmed the space, making it feel like a refuge from the blue-black sky outside littered with snowflakes.

“Where do we start?” Richard whispered.

Kitty looked around the room, but there was no sign of a bag. “You check the closet; I’ll check under the bed.”

Richard nodded and made his way around the four-poster bed frame towards the tall, dark wooden wardrobe nestled in the far corner. Kitty hitched up her dress a little and knelt down, lifting up the dust ruffle and peering into the cavernous space beneath the bed frame.

“I think I have it,” Richard’s hushed voice called.

Kitty dropped the dust ruffle and stood up, wiping her skirt. She scurried around to Richard’s side as he lifted a large green duffle bag out from the wardrobe and sat it on the bed. He looked over at Kitty.

“Do you want the honors?”

Kitty reached out and unzipped the top compartment of the bag, folding the flap back. She peered inside.

“It looks empty.” She glanced up at Richard, slightly relieved not to find a lot of personal items in it.

“Look for the hidden compartment,” Richard encouraged.

Kitty opened the flap as wide as it would go and tilted the bag towards the light a little. “I think I see something.” She reached in one slender hand, her fingers brushing a small silken ribbon. She tugged at it, and the base of the bag lifted away. Below the panel she lifted out was another, more solid looking base with a box shape cut into it. Kitty pushed a small brass button at one side of it, and a little lid popped up.

They both peered in at the leather-bound journal and pen that sat nestled in the small hidden space.

“So, Daniel was right,” Richard announced as he nodded.

“He was right about a book and pen,” Kitty replied, reaching in and plucking them out. As she did so, something fell from the journal, fluttering to the floor. Richard dove after it while Kitty opened the journal and began to flick through the pages of notes inside.

“My goodness!” Richard exclaimed.

“I know,” Kitty replied, her eyes fixed on the book in her hands. “It certainly looks like Jack Viker was onto something new. Everything is here… characters, outlines.”

“Not that,” Richard replied. “This.”

Kitty turned to see Richard holding the piece of paper that had dropped from the book.

“What is it?” Kitty asked.

“You won’t get away with this, you sorry excuse for a man. Our child is better off without you as a father. Which you might not admit to being, but you are. I promise you will be punished for your actions, signed Mona.” Richard looked up at Kitty.

“That was the name of his latest wife.” Kitty’s eyes widened. “Camilla said so earlier.”

“And it looks like she’s pregnant,” Richard added. “And the scoundrel was leaving her and disowning his child. I have to admit that I’m disliking this man more and more each day.
